I know I’m dating myself when I tell you that my first eight years of schooling were delivered in a one room school house. I still remember my first and probably only art lesson as a child. Mrs. Jean Gibson was the teacher. I was in Grade one. I was fascinated to watch her sketch on the blackboard and try to teach us how to draw the human body.

I also remember the rainy afternoon that she put some classical music on the record player, gave us a large sheet of paper and some crayons and told us to let the music tell us how to move our crayon. I loved it even then. But you know how it is sometimes, life gets in the way of dreams. Years passed and I didn’t think anymore about it.

But on my 50th birthday I decided it was time for me. I started with a weekend class in St. Marys’ taught by Anna Koot and she introduced me to Ellen Erenberg at Honoured Mountain Studio. I signed up for 8 weeks of lessons and was hooked. Needless to say, I stuck with it. I learned watercolour, classical drawing techniques, acrylic, and then dabbled in pen & ink and oils on my own.

That was seven years ago and I still can’t decide which I like better so I keep doing them all. It allows me the freedom to choose my medium depending on the subject. I especially like projects that I have been commissioned to do because it is meaningful to someone besides just me.

I can escape into my own little world and time disappears. The everyday stresses that go along with day to day living are put into the background for a period of time.

The thing with art is that not everyone likes the same thing so I can create things that pull at something in my heart and I hope that it strikes something in you too. Enjoy!!
